Vitalik Buterin, born 31 January 1994, is a Russian–Canadian programmer and writer primarily known as a co-founder of Ethereum and as a co-founder of Bitcoin Magazine.
Buterin was placed into a class for gifted children and was drawn to math, programming, and economics. For the last four years of schooling, he attended the Abelard School, a private high school in Toronto which only enrols up to 50 students annually to be educated by seven full-time faculty members, and three part-time faculty members.
“I noticed my attitude and my results almost immediately and drastically change. Education is ultimately much more than simply memorizing individual facts, or even learning individual concepts. [What] matters most: learning how to think, learning how to reason and learning how to learn.”
Buterin dropped out of the University of Waterloo to focus on Ethereum at the time he received the Thiel Fellowship
Buterin learned about Bitcoin in 2011, when he was 17, from his father Dmitry Buterin, a computer scientist. In 2013, he visited developers in other countries who shared his enthusiasm for code but then returned to Canada to begin his focus on Ethereum.
Writer and Co-Founder Bitcoin Magazine
In September 2011 Buterin accepted a proposal regarding a new publication called Bitcoin Magazine. He took on the position as the first co-founder, and contributed as a leading writer. The magazine is currently owned and operated by BTC Media.
Ethereum was first described in Buterin’s whitepaper late 2013 and development was funded by an online crowdsale which that took place between July and August 2014. The Ethereum Foundation was also set up in 2014. Enterprise Ethereum Alliance was launched early 2017 to connect “Fortune 500 enterprises, startups, academics, and technology vendors with Ethereum subject matter experts”. The alliance is supported by numerous global companies.
As explained on the Ethereum website:- “Ethereum is a decentralized platform that runs smart contracts: applications that run exactly as programmed without any possibility of downtime, censorship, fraud or third-party interference.”
2017 brought an ICO explosion which can be mostly attributed to Ethereum and the ease with which new coins/tokens can be created on the Ethereum blockchain, know as ERC-20. Many startups have raised millions of dollars on Ethereum.
