What is DogeCoin?

What is DogeCoin – DOGE … Or rather what’s with Dogecoin and the Dog? Dogecoin was originally created as a joke, referencing a meme about a funny-looking Shiba Inu dog that gained wide popularity on the internet.

So, What is Dogecoin?

Dogecoin is a decentralized peer-2-peer digital currency, jus like Bitcoin and can be used to easily transfer value online.

And yes, Dogecoin was set up as a bit of a joke thus creating a friendly community supporting the coin. It also helped adoption that the Doge Meme went viral.

This Video below references the DOGE phenomena

Dogecoin is based on Litecoin and any changes made to Litecoin will also apply to Dogecoin.

What really makes Dogecoin special is the community it attracted. Doge has now become the favourite cryptocurrency to tip people with on the internet.

The Dogecoin Foundation

The Dogecoin Foundation was founded by the community with the goal is “to facilitate the use of Dogecoin through goodwill, promotional and charitable endeavors.”

The first cause they raised funds for was in January 2014, when the Dogecoin community managed to successfully raise $50,000 in DOGE for the Jamaican bobsled team, which had qualified for, but could not afford to go to, the Sochi Winter Olympics. Thanks to Dogecoin, the team was able to compete in the Olympics that year.

Inspired by their earlier fundraising success, the Dogecoin Foundation began collecting donations to build a well in the Tana river basin in Kenya, in cooperation with the nonprofit organization Charity: Water.

They managed to hit a goal of 40 million DOGE ($30,000 at the time), collected from more than 4,000 donors.

In  2014, the Dogecoin community successfully raised 67.8 million DOGE (around $55,000) in an effort to sponsor NASCAR driver Josh Wise who participated in several races with his car decorated in a Dogecoin/Reddit- painted theme.

Doge to the Moon

Every crypto lover wants his coin “to moon”, another way of saying the prices will go very high. The Doge community actually took this to heart and even managed to raise enough funds to send a physical representation of a Dogecoin to the actual Moon, set to occur in 2019. Yes, Dogecoin is literally going to the Moon.
