What is Feathercoin

Feathercoin is among the closest altcoins related to Bitcoin. For example, it is mined in much the same way as Bitcoin and the system is set up to function very in many of the same ways as Bitcoin.

From the Feathercoin website:

“Feathercoin is an upgraded and customised version of Bitcoin. Feathercoin was born with the intent to expand, experiment, and build onto the blockchain technology in a manner open to all for participation. Block hashing uses the excellent NeoScrypt which is an updated version of Scrypt using modern faster elements. Feathercoin is also ten times faster than Bitcoin having 60-second blocks giving it that many times more capacity for transactions. The difficulty adjust eHRC (enhanced Hash Rate Compensation) to make sure that blocks come in on average at 60 seconds is also a unique solution first developed by Feathercoin and now used by several popular coins. Automatic Checkpointing is used to protect the history of the chain and prevent 51% attacks reversing transactions.”

Perhaps the most import difference is that the mining process ensures that ASIC miners won’t gain a huge advantage over GPU miners. Feathercoins uses a Scrypt based algorithm much the same as Litecoin but with an updated Neoscrypt as mentioned above.

Why Feathercoin?

Payments are fast, global, and secure with near zero payment fees. Therefore merchants do not have to pass on the cost of business to customers thus making Feathercoin a relatively cheap peer-2-peer alternative.

Mining Feathercoin

Mining is the act of using computational processing power to verify transactions on the Feathercoin network. As a reward for this effort, a miner is given Feathercoins. Mining can be done on either computer processors (CPUs) or graphics cards (GPUs), however, at this time GPU mining is the most efficient and best publicly available option.

Pools

The Feathercoin community really tries to push P2Pool as the best option for mining. P2Pool provides a good combination of pooled mining with the decentralization of solo mining.
