According to a shocking report by (CNN): The US government is considering a federal takeover of portions of the country’s mobile broadband networks. This is according to documents obtained by Axios.
A safeguard against Chinese cybersecurity is cited by a National Security Council official in a presentation to senior members of the President Donald Trump’s administration. The suggestion is that the United States needs to centralize its 5G network. Government control of 5G infrastructure would be unprecedented and highly controversial, as the industry has traditionally been privately controlled and AT&T told Axios that work to launch 5G service in the United States “is already well down the road.”

This is a very troubling development and a sign that governments will increasingly become active in controlling networks, citing security.
Connectivity of more devices certainly increase the risk of cyber attacks but commercial solutions, such as those highlighted in the EOT [Encryption of Things] business case are available and should be pursued rather than government control.
The integration of encryption, blockchain technology, and hardware could play a major part in protecting our networks of the future.
